When diving into any new hobby having the right equipment is crucial for many reasons from fitting into your new community to safety and effective training. In our blog this week here at Cojalina Martial Arts we have tried to do a breakdown of the must-have gear for the weekly classes we hold in Kickboxing, Kick-Jutsu, and Karate.
Kickboxing Equipment
Kickboxing is a high-intensity sport that combines punches and kicks. Here’s what you’ll need:
Kickboxing Suit: Designed for kickboxing, the suit allows for a full range of motion and helps manage sweat, keeping you comfortable throughout the class. Wearing a Cojalina uniform fosters a sense of unity and discipline among students, promoting a cohesive training environment.
Gloves: Essential for protecting your hands and knuckles while delivering powerful punches. Here at Cojalina we have branded gloves that fit well and provide good wrist support and knuckle protection.
Mouthguard: Protects your teeth and reduces the risk of concussions. You should mould your mouthguard to achieve a custom-fit mouthguard that offers the best protection.
Shin Guards: Essential for protecting your shins during sparring. Good shin guards cover the entire shin and have secure straps to keep them in place.
Headguard: Helps protect your head and face during sparring sessions. Our Cojalina headguards offer ample padding and protection whilst still offering a good level of visibility.
Foot Pads: These protect your feet and ankles while kicking. They also provide grip and stability. They are designed to protect not just you but also the person you are sparring against
Kick-Jutsu Equipment
Kick-Jutsu combines elements of striking and grappling, so the equipment required overlaps with both kickboxing and traditional martial arts:
Gloves: MMA-style gloves are used in our Cojalina Kick-Jutsu classes, they provide more flexibility for grappling and executing throws and sweeps while still protecting your hands during strikes.
Mouthguard: Essential for protecting your teeth and reducing injury risk during sparring.
Shin and Feet Guards: Necessary for protecting your legs during strikes and using the shin to block low kicks. These differ from our karate and kickboxing ones as the are one combined unit with more protection around the shin.
Gi or Uniform: Our Cojalina gi or uniform is similar to those worn in Judo. It is a thinker and heavier weave cotton that makes it more durable and ideal for grappling and throwing.
T Shirt: Often worn under the uniform to prevent friction and rashes during grappling.
Karate Equipment
Karate emphasises striking and traditional forms, with occasional throwing techniques, requiring specific gear:
Gi or uniform: We use a traditional style karate uniform at Cojalina Martial Arts, in our branded colours of blue and orange. It is made of a light weight cotton mix material to withstand all the aspects of karate training.
Obi (Belt): Indicates your rank and ties your gi. The colour represents your level of expertise.
Gloves: Essential for protecting your hands and knuckles while delivering powerful punches. Here at Cojalina we have branded gloves that cover the whole of the hand to provide good all-round protection.
They are designed to protect not just you but also the person you are sparring against
Nice to have but not essential:
Bag gloves: Not everyone likes to wear their sparring gloves for pad work and choose to use a light style of gloves that will still give good wrist and knuckle protection whilst hitting both bags and pads. Here at Cojalina we have branded gloves that can be used in all styles.
Hoodies: We offer both overhead and zip through hoodies at Cojalina, these are great for walking to and from training or as an everyday hoody.
Bag: Moving all your martial arts equipment about can be a hand full, to help with this we offer a branded bag that can be easily converted into a backpack. This keeps all your equipment easily accessible and in one place.
Hand Wraps: These provide additional support and protection for your hands, wrists, and knuckles. They help prevent injuries during intense sessions.
Conclusion
Equipping yourself with the right gear is vital for safe and effective martial arts training. Whether you’re practicing Kickboxing, Kick-Jutsu, or Karate, investing in quality equipment will enhance your performance and ensure you stay protected. Remember, the right gear not only safeguards your body but also allows you to train with confidence and focus. You would receive a uniform for your chosen style if you chose to join Cojalina Martial Arts.
